B12 vitamin information
Vitamin B12 – for the functioning of the blood and psyche
Vitamin B12 plays an active role in the new formation of red blood cells, which in turn affects a number of systems in the body. Vitamin B12 is also important for neurological properties and contributes, for example, to normal psychological function.
Mainly animal sources
To get vitamin B12, you need to eat a varied diet with mainly animal products such as fish, meat, shellfish, eggs, liver, milk and cheese. There is also B12 in vegetable sources but this form is inactive so the body cannot assimilate it.
Especially important for vegans and the elderly
Since the vegan diet excludes animal sources, vegans are generally at risk of vitamin B12 deficiency. Therefore, it is important for vegans to either take a supplement or choose foods that are fortified with vegan B12. Even lacto-ovo-vegetarians are at risk of vitamin B12 deficiency because dairy products and eggs contain relatively little B12.
Even older people can suffer from a lack of vitamin B12, mainly because the ability to absorb the vitamin decreases with increasing age. You must therefore increase the dosage of supplements the older you are.
Supplemented with folic acid
Elexir B12 vitamin is supplemented with the bioavailable folic acid Quatrefolic®. This folic acid is absorbed three times faster than regular folic acid and makes the absorption of vitamin B12 more efficient.
Folic acid is also recommended in connection with pregnancy, as it contributes to tissue growth in the pregnant woman. Elexir B12 is vegan and tastes like lemon.
